There are moments when one person’s struggle does far more than transform his own life; it opens doors for generations yet to come. The life of Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar is one such remarkable story — the journey of a young man who rose from the soil of Pakistan, travelled to Britain, built his identity through hard work and enterprise, entered the corridors of British politics, made history, and eventually returned to Pakistan to serve as Governor of Punjab.
Today, that extraordinary journey has entered a new chapter through his son, Lord Anas Sarwar.
Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar began his life in Britain with determination, perseverance and an unwavering belief in the value of hard work. After establishing himself in business in Scotland, he turned towards public life and, in 1997, was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Glasgow Govan.
His election was much more than a personal political achievement. It was a defining moment for Britain’s Muslim and Pakistani communities. His arrival at Westminster marked a new chapter in the story of Muslim representation in British public life and demonstrated that a man who had arrived in Britain as an immigrant could rise to the heart of the country’s democratic institutions.
During his years in Parliament, Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar raised issues affecting his constituents and wider communities, while giving particular attention to human rights, social justice and public service. His parliamentary career continued until 2010, but his political journey did not end there.
His deep attachment to Pakistan eventually drew him back to his homeland. In 2013, he was appointed Governor of Punjab. It was an extraordinary turn in the life of a man who had travelled from Pakistan to Britain in search of opportunity, only to return decades later to occupy one of the most distinguished constitutional offices in Pakistan’s largest province.
He later returned to the Governor’s House and served again as Governor of Punjab from 2018 to 2022.
Yet politics was only one part of Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar’s public life. Philanthropy and humanitarian service have also remained central to his work. Through charitable initiatives and the Sarwar Foundation, he has supported causes associated with education, healthcare, access to clean water and humanitarian welfare in Pakistan.

Today, when we see his son, Lord Anas Sarwar, serving in the British Government as Minister of State for Trade, there is a powerful sense of continuity a father’s struggle being carried forward by the next generation in a new political landscape.
Anas Sarwar followed his father into public life. In 2010, he was elected Member of Parliament for Glasgow Central. He subsequently served in the Scottish Parliament and, in 2021, became Leader of the Scottish Labour Party.
Over the years, he established himself as one of the most prominent figures in Scottish politics. For Britain’s Pakistani community, his rise represented another proud chapter in the story of a community whose contribution to British public life has grown steadily across generations.
Now, his political journey has reached another historic milestone.
In July 2026, Anas Sarwar was appointed Minister of State for Trade in the British Government. His appointment was accompanied by his elevation to the House of Lords, where he took his oath in September 2026.
The presence of Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, Parveen Sarwar, Anas Sarwar’s wife and his son at the swearing-in ceremony made the occasion more than a formal political proceeding. It became a profoundly emotional family moment — a moment in which decades of sacrifice, perseverance and achievement seemed to converge.
One can only imagine the emotions of a father who once arrived in Britain from Pakistan, built a successful business through determination, entered the House of Commons and made history, returned to Pakistan to serve as Governor of Punjab, and then lived to see his own son enter one of Britain’s most distinguished political institutions.
For Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar, it must have been a moment of immense pride.
But it was more than the pride of a father. It was the culmination of a journey across two generations.
The story of Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar also carries a wider lesson about migration. Migration need not be a story defined by loss, separation or uncertainty. Across the United Kingdom, successive generations of British Pakistanis are making their mark in politics, business, medicine, education, law, journalism and countless other professions. Their achievements are now woven into the wider story of modern Britain.
Lord Anas Sarwar’s success is therefore not merely a personal or family achievement. It forms part of a much larger story the story of a community that has travelled from the margins of British public life to positions of influence and responsibility.
But with achievement comes responsibility.
For Lord Anas Sarwar, the role of Minister of State for Trade brings significant responsibilities at a time when Britain’s economic future, international trade, investment and relationships with global markets are of enormous importance.
His position will naturally be followed with particular interest by Britain’s Pakistani community and by Pakistanis across the world. They will hope that his experience, influence and understanding of both Britain and the wider South Asian world will enable him to make a meaningful contribution to Britain’s international economic and trading relationships.
Ultimately, the journey from Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar to Lord Anas Sarwar is a story of two generations shaped by hard work, sacrifice, ambition and public service.
